This online training session is led by the Church Buildings Team and will cover everything you need to know about timings involved in a Faculty process.
Faculties can often take time to complete. There are many factors that can impact how quickly or how long the process takes from inception to permission. Factors such as waiting for a DAC meeting, or the consultation process can all determine how long an application takes. This can be frustrating when trying to schedule contractors or when to start the process so that works happen at a certain time. This training session led by the Church Buildings Team will cover all the major points in the faculty process that you need to take into consideration and explain how long certain elements can take. Who is this event suitable for?
This session is open to anyone involved with faculty applications.
When and where:
The session will be be hosted online via Zoom on Thursday 29th January 2026 from 3pm – 5pm.
How to book?
When logged in, click the bright yellow ‘Register’ button on the left hand side and you will be taken to the booking page. A Zoom link will be sent to all attendees prior to the event.
Faculties:
If a PCC agrees they would like to make any alterations to a church building, its contents, or its churchyard, an application for a Faculty will usually be required.
A Faculty is legal permission to carry out the development work. However, there are different permissions depending on what is being proposed so it is vitally important that whatever changes you have in mind, however small you think they are, that you get in touch with the Church Buildings Team in the first instance so they can best advise you.
The process to obtain the permission begins with a proposal from the PCC about the alterations and ends with a decision from the Chancellor of the diocese or the relevant Archdeacon as to whether it can go ahead.
Both the Chancellor and Archdeacon are advised by the DAC about the decision, which will balance the church’s missional aims and needs with the heritage and historical significance of the building or land.

Dan Crooke is the Diocesan Lead for Net Zero, and as DAC Secretary oversees the Church Buildings Team. He administers the Care of Churches measure, the Faculty Jurisdiction Rules, Schedule 1 (List A & List B), and church building Quinquennial Inspections for the Diocese.
